Jim Baldwin
I live in Bristol with my wife Pat and dog Phoebe in the south west
of England. My first wife died of cancer 15 years ago. I remarried 10
years ago. Our children are away in other parts of UK.
Career: I have had several jobs as physicist, mathematician and
computer scientist and worked as Professor of Artificial Intelligence at
University of Bristol for many years. I am now retired but still hold
the posts of Senior Research Fellow and Emeritus Professor. My work has
taken me all over the world and have been very happy times.
Music Interests: After having piano lessons as a child I gave up
playing until I was about 30. When young I was a choir boy and enjoyed
singing. I regained my interest in music later and bought a Challen
Piano and Thomas Organ. Since then I have owned many instruments
including Hammond Organ, Yamama SY77 synth, many Yamaha digital pianos
and a few keyboards. I now play the Yamaha CVP 509 with the Motif XS
Rack, Tyros 4 and EL900. I also learned to play guitar and for some
years this was my main instrument. I had several Yamama acoustic and
electric guitars.
My interests in music are very varied and like to listen to
classical, modern jazz, big band, rock , folk styles. My favourite song
writers are many but in particular Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Randy
Newman, Neil Young, Eric Bogle, Paul Simon, John Lennon, Shane MacGowan,
Tom Waits, Lily Allen, Alicia Keys and so many more. My favourite
keyboardists are Rick Wakeman, Oscar Peterson, Barbara Dennerlein, Enya,
Hiromi, Jacques Loussier and many more. My favourite singers are Kate
Melua, Mike Scot, Norah Jones, Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Adele,
Charlotte Church, Chris Rea, Christy Moore, Diana Krall, Ella
Fitzgerald, Eva Cassidy and so many more. My favourite groups and bands
are: U2, Oasis, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Cold Play, Genesis, Dire
Straits, Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Rolling Stones, Waterboys, Levellers
and again many more.
